Incense for World Peace Day

September 21st is the International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day. It’s a day dedicated to thinking about World peace, specifically the absence of war and conflict.

Just like most of you, I pray for world peace, sign the petitions and share the posts, with the hope that all together we’re making a difference, even if just a tiny bit. However, I fear that it’s not bringing about as much change as I’d like and maybe I could concentrate on things a little closer to home. Perhaps International Peace Day isn’t just political, but also about personal conflicts, our relations, and a day to consider our aim for inner peace.

After all, Sri Ramana Maharishi once said:

“If one’s mind had peace, the whole world would appear peaceful”.

So today, maybe I should contemplate my journey to inner peace and consciousness. Am I on my way? What’s holding me back? Am I present or dwelling in the past and holding grudges? Do I trust myself? Am I mistaking happiness for peace? What is this idea of peace anyway, and what am I chasing?

I started reading and found that spiritual leaders around the world, mostly came back to the root idea that inner peace is achieved through meditations on a higher being, to reach supreme consciousness. Peace comes from having unconditional love of the divine, being liberated from worldly attachments, anger, lust and the ego.

“Anger and attachment have left my body; hypocrisy and doubts are eradicated. The pain of egotism is gone, and I have found peace.”  (Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 773).

In short, I think it’s going to take a long time to attain true bliss. I don’t have the answers to world peace, political problems or the shortcut way to ultimate consciousness and inner harmony. And I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel pretty damn peaceful with a perfect cuppa, a digestive, all the washing done and some powerful incense.

Powerful incense – now there’s something I do know. The right incense can create harmonious feelings in your home, making you feel balanced and ready for anything. It’s a little bit of peace; just maybe not the same as the spiritual leaders were talking about.
